The Sundance Film Festival has embraced the virtual reality technology and has designed no less than 30 immersive experiences for the audiences in 2016. It will be a worth listing event for many. John Cooper, Director of Sundance Film Festival talks about their plans to the media.

Virtual Reality is spreading like fire among tech enthusiasts and has been welcomed by every segment of the tech-society beginning of the advertising industry, automobile, gaming industry, and finally the media and communications industry. The technology is evolving from an immersive 3D experience that you get from 3D glasses, but at a much higher level by actually making you feel that you are a part of the whole scene. The most affordable attempt at leveraging this technology and making it available to the general public and students is the Google Cardboard.

It works with any android smartphone that can run the app which provides specially designed videos, although short duration clips, to provide you with the experience at minimal cost.

The next major attempt is probably from the social-networking giant, Facebook, through the recently released Oculus Rift, along with a couple of games to give you that experience.

The other vendors such as HTC came with the Vibe VR, Sony brought its own PlayStation VR is trying to leverage the gaming community, as of now, that is taking a big bite at the new commercialization platform. Finally, the second major player being Microsoft that has brought an entirely new design and concept to VR by sharing experiences and unlimited connectivity options to bridge the gap and tap the opportunities that others have failed to deliver. The device is called Microsoft Hololens.

The Sundance Film Festival has curated some clips like a real-life homicide, a dead woman waking up from sleep after being frozen for 30 years and a close encounter with a whale- are some of the clips making the buzz around the media. As John Cooper exclaims, "It is pretty amazing!" it is only natural that everyone else is also quite interested in getting amazed. The entire lineup consists of 30 such experiences that were showcased in the New Frontier program. It only tells how filmmakers are willing to test this new way of storytelling and design content for the audience. As filmmakers like experimenting a lot, this should be really interesting to wait and watch.
