Quick Turnaround Of Draft Encryption Policy Is Blamed At Junior Dei-TY Officer.
A Draft Encryption Policy was released by the Indian Government to be obeyed by all telcos, businesses and companies. However, some faults led to revocation of the same within just one day.
Indian Government released a set of rules and regulations to be abided by all telecommunication companies, majors, businesses and internet companies called the Draft Encryption Policy. As per these norms they are to mandatorily maintain a log of all encrypted data safe for a period of 90 days in plain text and should be able to produce them, as and when necessary or ordered by a court of law. The inability of complying with these rules will be followed strictly with legal action against the company or companies concerned.
- The Draft Encryption Policy is targeted towards maintaining a leash or tab on the technology by specifying algorithms and the length of encryption keys for everyone.
The withdrawal was compelled because of a series of uproar from the people of the nation through social media calling it a draconian rule that must never be confirmed. As a result the draft was withdrawn. A statement was released later by the union IT minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad, clarifying that it was necessary because the draft was not properly formatted and contained confusing wording that lead to many misconceptions. He also went on clarifying that it was the particular word "user" that creates the chaos by altering the intended meaning of the whole purpose.
- According to him, "users of encryption" was to be replaced with "creators of encryption", that he found after reading the draft.
The whole blunder is blamed at some unknown junior level officer who worded it in his own way and released it to the public without higher-ups approval, which is, as we all know, completely preposterous. It was a mistake or perhaps a semantic glitch that was overlooked in the creation and later ditched over some scapegoats. Anyways, it is now supposed to be rewarded, which will take about 3 weeks, again an irony, and will come up with a finalized version that must be followed by law. He also adds that the controversy sprang up during the PM’s USA visit and to avoid any uncomfortable situation while he was away, whether in the nation or overseas, they revoked it immediately. Hence, things are being taken care of at the earliest.
